Honky Tonkin’ in Nashville, TN

After two glorious weeks of beachin’ in Grayton Beach, FL we finally decided it was time to move on in our journey. Our next stop was Nashville, TN. I’ve only ever flown through Nashville so I thought it would be fun to see the sites and maybe run into a famous singer OR Bobby Bones! None of which happened.

Our first night in Nashville was spent staying in an overpriced RV park because the campground we were aiming for was completely full. We’d made some plans to head into downtown Nashville so we decided we’d put on our finest jeans and out head! In my mind, I had imagined downtown Nashville to be cute and quaint with a lot of cozy bars and fun boutiques. I was WAY off. It’s similar to any crazy downtown area, such as 6th street in Austin.

After wandering around downtown for a short amount of time, we stumbled upon this back alley bar that looked like it might be a little divey on the inside so we ventured in. It was anything but divey, we were definitely under dressed for this swanky restaurant and the host let us know with their disapproving glare. Once we realized we were not welcome at this establishment, we made our way to Hattie B’s to eat some fried chicken, or as other people refer to it as “Hot Chicken” .

On Sunday we were able to grab a spot at Seven Points Campground right outside of Nashville and let me tell you, this campground was amazing! The spots were GIGANTIC, level, and just plain awesome. It sits right on Percy Priest Lake and some spots back right up to it. They even have their own little stair set down into the lake. There is even onsite laundry which makes life a little easier.

Since we were in a bigger town with shops available to us that aren’t usually, I thought I would pick up a few outfits for when I have to make myself presentable for work relations. We spent about 15 minutes looking at jeans before I had a meltdown and we promptly left. We then made our way to Trader Joe’s to grab our weekly groceries and that place was an absolute madhouse.

Monday we made our way to the Bluebird Cafe in hopes of grabbing a seat in the tiny little cafe to catch open mic night. The open mic night starts at 6PM which is a completely reasonable time for us to catch a show, especially on a school night. I was pretty excited. But apparently, this is quite the to-do. The line was about 100 people long by the time we got there and the venue only houses about 40 people. We quickly learned that people had been lined up since 3PM, well since we have jobs (and not on vacation which I assume these people were), we couldn’t get there until 5PM. As the story goes, we didn’t get in. Bummer. We then decided to eat more fried chicken.

Nashville was a great little (BIG) town but I’d have to say I enjoyed the campground a bit more than I did venturing into the city. I’ve come to realize that peace and quiet is what I value most. Moving back to Austin should be interesting.

Grayton Beach State Park – Grayton Beach, FL

Everyone that knows us, knows we love the beach. However, it’s a bit of a struggle because one of us doesn’t sit still very well so kicking back and relaxing at the beach usually lasts for about 15 minutes before boredom sets in. I, on the other hand, can kick back and read a book for hours while sitting on the beach. Potato potato.

When we first arrived at the campground we pulled around to our spot and quickly realized it was the exact same spot we had last year when we visited in our 1966 Globetrotter. It took a little more finesse getting the longer Airstream into this spot but it all worked out.

The minute we unhitched in Grayton Beach, we made our way right to the white sugary sand and jumped right into the crystal clear water. After about 30 minutes of swimming, we decided we would head back up to the beach. As we were settling in, we were quickly deterred due to the insane amount of biting flies. When we got back to the Airstream, we learned a little more about these tiny little devils. They are apparently pretty bad on the Florida beaches in late August and early September. If the wind is blowing to the south you can expect them to be on the beach with you, but if the wind changes to the north they disappear.

Fortunately, the wind spent most of it’s time blowing north which meant we were able to spend our afternoons enjoying the beach.

It’s amazing how gorgeous the beaches are in the Florida panhandle. After having visited many lovely crystal clear beaches in my lifetime, I was shocked the first time we visited the Santa Rosa area. Pleasantly surprised.

We even were able to catch a couple of awesome sunsets which is usually a stretch for me, considering I am in bed by 7:30PM most nights.

Right down the road from Grayton Beach is the cute little town of Seaside. They have a row of Airstreams that have been converted into food trucks. It always breaks Mr. TCP’s heart when he sees the really small Airstreams turned into anything other than being restored to it’s natural state.

Five Months of Full Time RVing – Airstream Style

We set sail five glorious months ago and haven’t looked back. Instead of going on about depressed I am about the fact that I will be a cube dweller in just 30 short days, I am going to highlight some of our favorite stops.

Over the course of our journey we visited five national parks, which are different from state parks and national forests. Lets review those national parks, shall we?

The first national park we visited was Yosemite National Park. We visited over Memorial Day weekend so we had expected large crowds, and large crowds we got. We escaped the crowds by hitting one of the parks more challenging hikes. Remember the four mile hike? It was the one I was certain one of us was going to have to be air lifted out of. But we made it. Yosemite National Park was gorgeous and gigantic.

After Yosemite, we made our way to Crater Lake National Park, with a few stops in between. At this point we had started to recognize the Tahoe wasn’t loving all of the mountain passes we were forcing her to pull the Airstream through. Having recognized her struggles, we decided to leave the Airstream in Ashland and head to Crater Lake National Park for a day trip. There was still snow on the ground in the park which meant certain roads were not open to motor vehicles. We’d heard about a fun little hike but it was only reachable by either trekking 5 miles in on foot or by bicycle. Since it was a paved road we decided biking was best. It was a fun, quickish, way to see Crater Lake and all of it’s glory given we were only there for a day. Side note: when we made our way to Bend, OR we ended up having to pass by Crate Lake National Park anyway. Jokes on us.

We didn’t visit another national park until we reached Montana. Glacier National Park is one that is rarely highlighted to the same effect Yosemite and Yellowstone are. Which is fine by us. Less advertising means less people. And boy oh boy, Glacier National Park is hands down our favorite park. It is gorgeous and has over 700 miles of hiking trails. We loved Glacier so much we left and then came back! One weekend we spent hanging out on the West side sans bears and then the following weekend we moved over to the East side where all of the bear activity was. This was not by design but more of an accident. Bottom line, Glacier is amazing and we will be back.

After leaving Glacier we made our way to southern Montana where we stayed for a while. The little place we were staying was right on the Yellowstone National Park border and on the Yellowstone River. We had the opportunity to venture in for the first time one evening after work. Holy moly. It was overwhelming to say the least. There were people crawling everywhere. We spent the evening walking around some mild trails and we saw a family of Elk. That weekend we set out on a very intense mountain bike adventure that nearly killed me. Lucky for you, I made it out alive. Otherwise, these blogs would be donezo. All in all, Yellowstone wasn’t our favorite but yet an American classic.

Once we left Yellowstone, we ventured in the Grand Teton National Park and grand it is. Here we found a great little boondocking spot that has a pretty fantastic view of the Tetons. And for free. What more could you ever want. Anyway, we spent our afternoons after work exploring the park and one evening we even knocked out a 7 or 8 miles hike to Taggart Lake. The Tetons are gorgeous and much less crowded which makes them a must visit on our list.

Of the five national parks, Glacier National Park makes it to the very top of our “favorite park list” and definitely our favorite place so far on this journey. Can you believe it? It beat Bend.

We are INCREDIBLY grateful for this amazing journey and all that is has offered in just five short months. We love this tiny life we lead and hope to get back on the road sooner rather than later. Of the most amazing people we’ve met, the older folks are our favorite. When we spend time talking with the older RVers they quickly learn that we are on the road full time and their reactions are priceless. They proceed to tell us how amazing that is and they all wish it was something they’d done sooner in life. We hear stories about what got them on the road at this point in their life and it inspires us. As if we need more inspiration. We are leading a life we love and doing something that society thinks is bogus, which in my book is a win. Living outside a box is what makes life so damn amazing.

Downhill Mountain Biking – Angel Fire, NM

As you may already know, we’ve started our journey to the beach! There were a few different ways we could get there but first, I wanted to make a little detour to visit some friends. We have some very adventurous and awesome friends who live in Taos, NM so we stopped by to visit them and they were kind enough to let us “moochdock” in their driveway.

After months of battling our old broken down bikes we finally pulled the trigger and bought a pair of, matching, mountain bikes. I really feel like a grown up now. And what better way to really put them to the test than to go down hill mountain biking?

We did just that. We loaded up the bikes and headed to Angel Fire, NM. Angel Fire’s downhill trails make all of the important “top down bike trails in the USA” lists every year. They have a ton of professional races each summer and their trails are top notch.

Kaitlyn and Michael are what you would consider professional downhill mountain bikers. Well, it is what we would consider them. They both were kind enough to show us the ropes and wait patiently as we slowly rolled down the mountain on our first attempt. They gave pointers and were very encouraging. After we started to gain some confidence we really started to enjoy ourselves. It’s crazy the amount of control it takes to keep your bike up right and your body from flying all over the place.

We definitely stood out in a crowd of professional downhillers. We had on our regular ol’ biking helmets with our hardtail mountain bikes. HA! What a joke. The professionals had on full face helmets, body armor and were cruising down the mountain in a sweet full suspension “downhill” mountain bike. We managed with our mediocre “gear” and had the time of our life!

The trails works similar to how they do when you are snow skiing. They have greens, blues, blacks, double blacks, and then “you’re nuts if you go down this”. Don’t worry mom and dad, we stuck to the greens and blues which were challenging enough. You ride the ski lift up to the top but instead of carrying your bike with you like you do your ski equipment, you put your bike on a special “bike” ski lift. The people working the top of the ski lift take them off for you and it’s waiting for you at the top when you arrive.

We couldn’t be more grateful for sweet friends like Kaitlyn and Michael who graciously opened their home (and driveway) to us all while taking us on one of the craziest adventures we’ve been on yet.

Sweet Summertime in the Mountains – Pagosa Springs, CO

We arrived in Pagosa Springs, Colorado by way of Twin Lakes on Monday evening. Our original plan of spending a few days in Twin Lakes was brought to a halt due to a weird rumbling of the ground at our campsite which was discussed in this blog post. Anyway, we left Twin Lakes with a longish drive ahead of us after work on Monday which meant we’d be arriving in Pagosa Springs close to sunset. Mr. TCP prefers to not drive in the dark, ever, and I really don’t like having to direct him into a spot in the dark. The chances of accidentally stepping on a snake are much higher. Anyway, we arrived in Pagosa Springs with about 45 minutes until complete darkness.

The first spot we had scouted out via Campendium was an awesome little place right off of a forest road tucked into the mountains that backed right up to a river. Picture perfect, I tell you. There was even an abundance of great trees to hang the hammock. But as most of these stories go, we didn’t have any service. We’d decided we would head on down the road closer to town to one of the other forest roads we’d past.

At this point, it was getting quite dark and we didn’t want to play the “will we have service” game until midnight so we decided to call it a night and set up shop at an in-town campground. We decided we’d just get up early in the morning to scout some of the places we passed the previous evening. Fortunately, the forest roads closer to to town had great coverage so we packed up at lunch and headed to our new neighborhood.

Once we got settled into the new ‘hood, we quickly realized that we had some adorable, noisy, neighbors who weren’t so sure of us.

We had plans of hitting a variety of trails each day after work, however, the weather had different plans. It rained each day starting around 3PM and didn’t let up until about 6PM. We did make it to the hot springs one afternoon which was a nice surprise.

Finally, on Friday afternoon we decided we were going to try to hike to a waterfall regardless of rain. Being cooped up in the Airstream can make the dogs (and humans) a little crazy so we decided to bring along our adventure dog. He LOVES to go on hikes so we try to take him whenever we can. It felt good to lace up the hiking shoes and enjoy the great outdoors before another storm rolled in.

Our plan was to hike to Rainbow Hot Springs Saturday morning but instead we got the truck stuck in the mud as we were pulling out, because well, it rained like crazy all night. Anyway, it took a tow truck a few hours to get to us and by the time we were free of the mud pit it had started to rain again. We didn’t get to go on that planned hike. Instead, we went into town to pick up some mail and decided we’d check out a demo sale a local bike shop was having. At this point in our journey, we have been pedaling around on some pretty beat up bikes so we have been “shopping” around for some new, affordable, mountain bikes. A shop in town had just what we were looking for PLUS they were on sale so we pulled the trigger and picked up two new (to us) Specialized hard tail mountain bikes.

We spent the afternoon exploring some back country roads that led deep into the mountains. We pedaled up the mountain four miles and it felt like a breeze! Having gears that work properly is a game changer. On our descent down the mountain I was surprised to experience “braking” as I picked up some speed. Bikes that work definitely make for a more enjoyable ride through wilderness.

Sunday, we had grand plans to head up to Wolf Creek to bike up and then downhill all the way back to the bottom. You see, Wolf Creek doesn’t run their ski lifts in the summer so instead of catching a ride to the top of the mountain with your bike in tow, you climb about 8 miles and gain a couple of thousand feet in elevation while you do it. It was going to be a challenge, one we were excited about, but once again, it was storming.

Apparently it’s monsoon season in Colorado which would explain the storms each day we’ve been there. Between the storms and the elevation, I have been dreaming of a hot, humid beach and that is just what we are going to do! Regardless of everyone’s opinion as to why we shouldn’t head to the beach, we are making our way there with hopes of spending a week or so. But don’t worry, we will then burn more diesel to make it back into the mountains once we’ve wrapped up our beach vacation. Keep your rain away from this parade people because I AM SO EXCITED!

Why Don’t You Stay Places Longer?

One question we get quite often is, “why don’t you guys stay places longer?”. This is a great question and there are a plethora of reasons why we move on. But, let’s not forget the 27 days we spent in Bend, OR.

Internet connectivity. This is the number one reason we move on. If we are somewhere that doesn’t have any connection or a weak one, we have to move on. Unfortunately, we have found some AWESOME spots to call home for a week or so but they didn’t have internet, and someone has to pay the bills.
Safety. Of all the places we have stayed over the months, we haven’t ever really been in fear for our safety. However, there have been some moments when we weren’t real sure what was around us or under us. For example, we found a great little spot in Twin Lakes, CO but the ground rumbled/vibrated so intensely that we decided it best we move on. We couldn’t figure out what was causing the rumbling but figured better safe than sorry. Oh, and one of us has been practicing our marksmanship every day for the last two months, so watch out world!

Very small town. I love a good ol’ small American town but when there isn’t much to do, we get bored (and hungry) and decide it’s time to move on. Remember how I love a good grocery store? Well, those are hard to come by in very very very small towns. It’s usually just a large gas station that will have a few extra items. None of which are in any way good for you. And remember, we live in a small space, so we can’t just stock up when we are in bigger cities.
Very big city. We try to avoid big cities at all costs for many reasons, but when we do end up near one we don’t stay for long. It’s usually very expensive and the RV parks are cramped.
Because we can. This right here is the whole reason we are mobile. We can make a move whenever we want. As a kid I would ask my dad if I could do something and occasionally he would respond with a “No.”. When I would ask why, his response would always be “Because I can.” He’s a hoot.

In reality, we spend on average six days in one place. In the last month we spent ten nights in field outside of Yellowstone park and ten nights in the Tetons with a few nights in between. We plan to be in our current neighborhood for at least eight days.

The Oregon Coast – Bandon, OR

After we left Bend, OR for the first time, we headed east to the Oregon coast with our sight set on an awesome state park right off of the 101. The campground was covered in beautiful green giant mossy trees. We found the perfect spot that separated us from the other campers and it was right on the path to the beach. We even had another couple eyeing us for the spot. Well, they ended up getting it because we quickly realized we had zero internet coverage. This was a disappointment but I am glad we realized it before unhitching in the new neighborhood.

We moved down the road a little ways to Bandon, OR where there is a well maintained state park with full hookups. From the campground, it was roughly a mile hike to a dog friendly beach. Meaning, you could let your dogs run wild along the coast! George is a well versed when it comes to beaches. He has dipped his toes in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific Ocean. He quickly learned, the water doesn’t taste too good. Serendipity though, has never been to the beach! And we rarely let her off leash given she can’t see and just wanders around into things. But this time we let her loose and she had the time of her life.

Our Top Airstream Must-Haves

UPDATED October 31, 2017: A lot of these items are not “Airstream” specific, but rather items that we enjoy in our day-to-day life as well as our adventuring life.

When you are looking to make a move into a small space you have to be strategic in what you bring over. It is very much a what do we “need” rather than what do we “want”. It is also a great way to recognize what you absolutely need in life. I can tell you that we still do not use everything we have in our Airstream AND all of our storage compartments are not being utilized. As in, they are empty.

I would say one of my favorite, and most useful, items we brought with us is our Berkey Water filtration system. It was actually a gift from my dad. He had purchased a larger version for our home back in Austin but given our new home size he gifted us a smaller version, which is awesome. He is awesome.

In order to stay connected, which I have to do for my job, we have a few different systems in place. The first being Verizon Mifi 4G which allows us to access the internet from literally anywhere. Well, anywhere Verizon has coverage. We follow their coverage map when we are scouting out our next location which is helpful and frustrating at times because there are some pretty awesome places we would like to stay but can’t due to the lack of service. We have a booster for when the service is lacking which is super helpful. I somehow broke it earlier this week so we are waiting on a replacement. Shocker.

Our Camelbaks have come in SUPER handy. You might be sensing a theme here. Water. It’s important and anyone who knows me knows that I drink A TON of water. I believe it is kind of like the chapstick theory, the more you use the more you need. Or something like that. The yellow Camelbak was a gift from my very generous grandmother and the blue one was a birthday gift for Mr. TCP a few years ago. They are the best and we would be awfully thirsty without them.

Cameras are an important part of this journey because how else would we be able to share our experiences with you!? In all seriousness, Mr. TCP is a professional video man so his stuff is a bit more intense than just sharing fun pictures with the family, it’s his bread and butter. We brought along a Canon 7D with various lenses, a GoPro with all of the fun accessories to ensure it’s always strapped it us somehow, and a Phantom 3 Drone.

The ENO hammock is another fan favorite of ours. Actually, it’s more of a fan favorite of mine. The mister hasn’t even sat in it. Not even once! He is missing out on all of the fun. It was another gift from my grandmother. She is the best!

Bear spray is Mr. TCP’s favorite item, another gift from my dad. He carries it with him everywhere, regardless of the region, because you never know when you’ll encounter Yogi the bear.

We’ve really been lucky with the very useful gifts our family has generously given us. They’ve clearly come in handy and have been well used throughout our journey!

Your Own Personal Tour of the San Diego Zoo

This is a bit overdue. We visited the San Diego Zoo a couple of weeks ago. Everyone knows that the San Diego Zoo is a must see when in town and having visited a few times before, we never actually made it to the zoo. Well, this time we were determined to do so. However, the cost of admission is pretty steep so it was a bit of a bug to swallow. But hey, we were blowing throw cash as it was so what’s another $100 bucks.

We started out by heading toward the Urban Jungle to see the giraffes, elephants and koalas which were adorable by the way. The kangaroos were off exhibit for the time being so we didn’t get to see them. The elephants were fun and funny. They had, what the zoo keeper called a “giant kong” (like for dogs), that they filled with special treats and the elephants had to get it out with their trunks. Just adorable. The flamingos seemed very fitting given our current living situation. People with Airstreams apparently LOVE flamingos. I can’t say we share the same sentiment. I mean, they’re fun but I am not going to deck our Airstream out in them.

We then headed over to the Elephant Odyssey to see, you guessed it, more elephants! This time we were able to visit with the giraffes which is always fun. They for some reason remind me of my mom. Maybe she liked giraffe prints things, who knows. Anyway, they were fun and adorable. Especially the baby giraffes. Who doesn’t love BABY GIRAFFES.

After the Elephant Odyssey, we made our way to the Asian Passage to see some of the animals of there…not real sure which ones. But we tried to go see the Pandas at the Panda Canyon but good glory there was a one and half hour wait and we are both WAY too inpatient for that nonsense.

Then we wound our way to the Northern Frontier to check out the polar bears. They were kind of dirty but also super cute. I guess it’s hard to keep that white coat clean. They would swim under the water which would have been neat to see but there were a million people standing in front of the glass with their damn selfie sticks trying to snap a photo of them with the polar bear. Those are the people you hear about on the news who fall into the exhibits because they are idiots. I’d hoped to see some penguins here but couldn’t find any. How sad. UPDATE: My sister just informed me that the reason I didn’t see any penguins in the Northern Frontier is because they live in the Southern Hemisphere. See people, this is why I usually Google things before writing (or speaking) because I am not the brightest crayola in the box. Thanks for always looking out for me, Holly!

Next on the map was the Lost Forest. Here we were able to see rhinoceros (had to google that one) and the hip-pop-otamus which are big wrinkly slimy animals. But cute.

We also saw some monkey’s along the way somewhere and then towards the end we headed over to the Discovery Outpost to see Mr. TCP’s favorite animal apparently, the galapagos tortoise. He LOVES anything old so this was very fitting.

Catalina State Park – Coronado National Forest

We left New Mexico last Thursday to head towards Coronado National Forest outside of Tucson, AZ. We hadn’t completely decided where we would stay, yeah yeah I know, so I googled places to camp in the area and found some good reviews for Catalina State Park on Campendium so Catalina State Park it is!

Our drive from Las Cruces to Catalina State Park was longgggg. Mylanta. I think the estimated time was around 4 hours, according to Google Maps, which in reality we expect it to take more like 5 to 5 and half hours. WELLLLL, I-10 was shut down right outside Lordsburg, NM which re-routed us up to highway 70 for around 60 miles. With the lowered speed limits, extra traffic, and new route I think it took us around 8 hours to arrive at Catalina State Park. We had thought about stopping elsewhere for the night but couldn’t find a spot that wasn’t completely out of the way. Anyway, we sure are glad we kept on trekking.

We had originally planned to only stay Thursday and Friday night but when we woke up Saturday morning to head out, I convinced Mr. TCP that we should stay through the week. I was worn out from that previous drive, and honestly, what is the rush? When we determine where we are going to stay, we have to think about my work schedule so driving long distances during the week really isn’t an option. AND DRIVING LONG DISTANCES SUCKS. We headed up to the park ranger station and paid for our spot through Friday. What a relief. Oh, and as we were hitching up the trailer to move spots, Mr. TCP noticed that our left front tire on the Airstream was a bit shredded. You can read more about that here.

This park is great for many reasons and has really exceeded our expectations. Everything is super nice, well maintained and we practically have the park to ourselves during the week. We also go lucky with the location of the park, it’s in this town called Oro Valley which has great grocery stores and a Target. I think we visited the Target a total of 5 times since we have been here. Some of those trips we did not acquire anything new but one of the trips was to get new pillows. Riveting, I know. We started out with our king size pillows and since have decided those are just too big for our little ol’ bed.

Over the weekend we had the luxury of heading over to the other side of Coronado National Forest to hike Seven Falls. It was a fun and challenging hike. I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you are ever in the area.

I received this awesome hammock as a Christmas gift from my grandmother and it has been one of my favorite things so far. We were lucky to park near a spot that has trees to hang it on. From this point forward, I am going to judge camping spot based on the ability to hang my new Eno hammock. It’s the best!

I found the perfect spot for this awesome hammock.

Last night we had the converter break on us which means that the A/C wasn’t going to work. It’s been in the high 90s here lately so that was fantastic. Fortunately, Mr. TCP has replaced one of those before on our other Airstream so he ordered the parts and will be putting a new one tomorrow. Oh, and we are getting new tires today. These last couple of days have been expensive.

Arizona has really surprised us with it’s beauty and wide range of trails to hike. Our next stop is going to be somewhere along the way to San Diego, but we will be back Arizona!
